London Photography Workshop / Photowalk planning session at Camden Town

Postcode district: NW1, NW5 What3Words – raft.filed.types

Here's a few - ok - rather a lot lol - from my walkabout around Camden Town last year as part of scouting for a London Photography Workshop I may be doing later this year. This is more about capturing a sense of 'place' rather than just any obvious architecture. If you've not been before it certainly worth a visit, but get there earlier in the day as by lunchtime its HEAVING with people !!!

Gear used...

Nikon Z6ii with a Nikon Z24-70mm f2.8 no filters, no tripod

Technique(s)...

As this was primarily a Photowalk I chose to use just my 24-70mm where I also decided to ONLY shoot at f2.8. This is the best way to separate the subject from the 'noise' of the busy surrounding area of 'stuff' and people

As this location is so incredibly busy later on I feel its not somewhere suited to anything needing a tripod

Post-Processing...

All done in Adobe Lightroom using a variety of Masks; mostly for separating the Subject from the Sky/Ground, for adding Gradient Masks to the Sky, and for using both Linear & Radial Masks as a means of applying localised Dodging & Burning, and enhancing selective colours, clarity, etc

I'll jump right into the many varied photos of this inspiring & quirkiest of places

Now you've seen the photos here's an explanation of what Camden Town is all about and why its so good for photography too...

Camden Town is a vibrant and eclectic area located in the north of London. Known for its alternative culture, arts scene, and lively markets, Camden has long been a hub for creative expression and youth subcultures. Here’s an overview of the area:

History and Development:

  • Camden Town has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. Originally, it was a residential and industrial area, but its transformation began with the opening of Camden Lock Market in the 1970s

  • Historically linked to the canal system, with warehouses and factories dominating its landscape. The Regent’s Canal, which runs through Camden, was vital for transporting goods during the industrial revolution.

Camden Market:

  • The Heart of Camden: Camden Market is the area's crown jewel. It's a collection of several markets, including Camden Lock Market, Stables Market, and others, offering a mix of street food, fashion, art, antiques, and unique crafts. The market is known for its bohemian vibe and attracts tourists and locals alike

  • Food! I know its already been mentioned, but I feel it needs a bullet-point of its own! This place has more food outlets than anywhere else I've ever been, there's pretty much everything you could ask for here. I had to try one of the Chinese stalls and WOW I was not disappointed. I suspect you'd LOVE the food offered here

  • Its also a hotspot for alternative fashion. You'll find everything from punk rock-inspired clothing and vintage shops to handmade jewelry and art. It's a great place for unique, independent fashion that you won't find on the more usual high street

Music Scene:

  • Punk & Alternative Culture: Camden has a strong connection to music, particularly punk, rock, and alternative genres. The area has been home to iconic venues like the Roundhouse, a former railway engine shed turned performance space, and the Electric Ballroom

  • Legendary Venues: Historically, places like the Camden Underworld have hosted some of the most famous acts in music, and the area continues to be a key destination for live music lovers

Nightlife:

  • Camden Town is known for its buzzing nightlife. The area has numerous pubs, bars, and clubs where you can enjoy live music, DJ sets, or just a good night out. The area's nightlife caters to a range of tastes, from cozy pubs to underground clubs

Photography Attractions – ok so its pretty much all of it, but to help:

  • Camden Lock: The famous lock on the Regent’s Canal is a picturesque spot in the heart of Camden. It's a great place to relax, people-watch, or take a boat ride along the canal

  • The Stables Market: Housed in a former horse stable complex, this market is full of quirky shops and interesting antiques. It's one of the largest markets in London

  • Regent’s Canal Walk: Take a peaceful stroll along the canal, which runs through Camden, or even rent a bike or take a boat ride. The walk offers a unique view of the area, especially as it leads you through to the more peaceful areas of Regent’s Park

  • Camden has long been associated with an alternative lifestyle, embracing the unconventional, creative, and the "outsider" elements of society. It has a history of attracting artists, musicians, and counter-culture movements. The area is a melting pot for various styles, subcultures, and communities; which pretty much makes it perfect for 'Street' Photography too

Getting there:

  • Camden Town Tube Station: Camden Town is easily accessible by the London Underground via the Northern Line; this was my starting point and its where the What3Words I posted takes you

  • Camden is well connected to the rest of London by both bus and overground train, with Camden Road and Kentish Town stations nearby.

Overall Atmosphere:

  • Eclectic & Artistic: Camden Town has a lively, artistic atmosphere where people from all walks of life can come together. It's a place that embraces diversity, creativity, and individuality, making it one of the most interesting and unique areas in London

To sum up...

Obviously, as you've seen and now read, Camden Town a FAB place for photos & people watching; but if you're also into one or more of... history, music, shopping, or simply exploring an area full of character, Camden Town has something for everyone!
