Spring has Sprung in Williamson Park, Lancaster

Sometimes capturing the essence of a Landscape can be more important, more beautiful and more telling than the wider scene can portray; as here from Sunday morning's stroll around Williamson Park

For those of you who’ve not had the pleasure of visiting Williamson Park take a peek via this link, you’ll defo want to visit if you can

Back to my shoot on Sunday 9th March 2025…

Its not often you come back with 70 'Keepers' from less than 2-hours of photography!

These were all shot with a Nikon Z105mm macro lens on one of my Nikon Z6ii cameras, and for the closest I was shooting at f32 and the DoF is still wafer thin

Whenever I have a 'macro' session I always take my tripod, but never seem to use it lol, so these are mostly 1,000 - 4,000 ISO to keep the Shutter Speed high enough to avoid camera shake; apart from the ICM of course, which is actually Silver Birch trees at 1/10th second and a flick of the wrist

If you're struggling to get out & about for a shoot, just go to your local park and shoot close-ups or macros :)

Here’s a bit more info all about Williamson Park for those of you who don’t know it - yet

Its a perfect & varied location for anyone wanting Bespoke 1-2-1 Photography Training from Beginner to Seasoned enthusiast

Williamson Park is a public park located in Lancaster, best accessed through the imposing stone & iron gates off Quernmore Rd, Lancaster LA1 1UX

It offers a mix of natural beauty, historical significance, and recreational spaces

Spanning over 54 acres and its one of the Lancaster's most popular outdoor spots. Here's a bit more about what makes it special:

  1. History and Development: the park was opened in 1866, and it was named after local benefactor, Dr. Williamson, who donated the land for the park's creation. It was designed to offer the people of Lancaster a peaceful retreat, and much of its layout and features have remained intact

  2. The Ashton Memorial: one of the park’s most iconic landmarks is the Ashton Memorial, a large Edwardian structure situated on the top of the hill within the park. Built between 1907 and 1909, it stands as a tribute to local industrialist Lord Ashton. The memorial is a grand, domed building that offers panoramic views over Lancaster, Morecambe Bay, and the surrounding areas. Ashton Memorial is also licensed for Weddings too, as you can see on my sister website Ashton Memorial Wedding Photographer and Lancaster Wedding Photographer at Ashton Memorial

  3. Nature and Wildlife: Williamson Park is home to a variety of wildlife and lush gardens. It features woodlands, formal gardens, and meadows, providing a diverse environment for nature lovers. The park’s collection of trees, flowers, and plants makes it a beautiful spot for a leisurely walk or picnic. There is a nice cafe (I recommend their great value English Breakfast) and a small gift shop too

  4. Play and Recreation: in addition to its natural beauty, the park also includes two playgrounds for children of all ages, making it a family-friendly destination. The surrounding areas offer pathways for walking and cycling, and the space is ideal for outdoor activities like jogging and picnics

  5. Butterfly House: another popular attraction within the park is the Butterfly House, where you can see a variety of tropical butterflies. The house is a unique feature of Williamson Park, adding to its charm for both adults and children alike

  6. Events and Activities: The park is often used for community events, festivals, and outdoor performances, offering a venue for cultural experiences in a scenic setting

Williamson Park is a lovely spot to enjoy nature, learn about local history, chill-out and take in some of the best views in the Lancaster area. Whether you're a history buff, nature lover, or just looking for a relaxing place to spend some time, the park is a great choice
